"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Do everything in love.."
1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ESV

We all feel overwhelmed at times.
How do you know when you are overwhelmed?  What can trigger this feeling? What do you do when it happens? What rhythms have you found to help minimize this?

God's Word

  • Psalm 55:22 "Cast all your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken."
  • 1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
  • Matthew 11:28-30 "Come to me all you who are wearied and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
  • Psalm 46:10 NLT "Be still and know that I am God. I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world."

How do you know when  you are overwhelmed?
Each of us shared how we realize we are overwhelmed.

How do you prevent yourself from getting overwhelmed?
Some useful rhythms  we have found that help are:

  • Sabbath - have a day of rest/margin
  • Time in the Word Daily - connect with God, get an eternal perspective, find refuge
  • Review God's promises - take comfort in God and His power, our identity in Christ
  • Budget your time - list your priorities and projects, put them in a calender/time buckets; and make sure you have some margin left
  •  Get perspective and do not take everything personally. List all the things on your mind, then identify which ones you "chose" and which are in your life as a result of others. Realize you can only control you - not everything or everyone in your orbit,
  • Give up on being the "ideal" parent or friend, give yourself grace to be human and imperfect.
  • Give the person or situations to God in prayer
  • Put your cares or worries on a paper and put them in a sealed box. Once you gave them to God, it is His job to take care of the outcome.
  • Talk things out with one or more other people

QUIET TIMES

  • Psalm 46:10 - Be still-God will be honored
  • 2 Timothy 2:3 - Endure hardship with us
  • Matthew 16:5-12 - Do you still not understand?
  • Mark 14:31 - Overconfidence in self
