Show Notes Transcript

Pride and praise, when is it healthy? When is it unhealthy? What does Scripture say about this? What is appropriate for us to do as followers of Christ?  Join us as we reflect on this and draw on some of what Scripture says about it.

As a Christian, you are given everything by God, so that you can work out of the gifts you have for God’s glory. Work well for the glory of God. When we deflect, minimize or steal the glory of God that is sinful pride.

From the book The Intentional Father: a man is an image bearer and son of God entrusted with the power and responsibility to create, cultivate care and defend for God’s glory and the good of others.

Men, we are capable of so much. God has built us and designed us to achieve anything he calls us to. We are to remember it is for God’s glory and the good of others, not to bring the glory to ourselves.

"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Do everything in love.."
1 Corinthians 16:13-14 ESV

“We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Thessalonians 1:3

“We were not looking for praise from people, not from you or anyone else, even though as apostles of Christ we could have asserted our authority.” 1 Thessalonians 2:6

Pride: a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.

“For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?” 1 Corinthians 4:7

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”  Ephesians 2:10

You are given everything by God, so that you can work out of the gifts you have for God’s glory.

Work well for the glory of God. When we deflect, minimize or steal the glory of God that is sinful pride.

“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” Ecclesiastes 12:13

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

Fear of the Lord: Respect, honor.  He is to be number one, not ourself. Unhealthy pride is not fearing the Lord  Fear of the Lord looks like keep God’s commands, love Him. Love your neighbor as yourself.

Pride is one of the key topics found in Proverbs, a book of Wisdom (tied with laziness as the most mentioned).

“The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and a man is tested by his praise.” Proverbs 27:21
